A public service

Some years ago, the owner of a newspaper company for which I worked stated that he felt managing a community newspaper presented the greatest opportunity for public service available.

That company had a powerful sense of service, and I’ve tried to continue it through the years as I’ve worked in various locations.

We do our best to report the news fairly and accurately. We attend a lot of meetings and talk to hundreds of people – with power and without. We also donate money, free advertising, and other services that help local groups and organizations gain recognition and/or support.

Here are some tips to get your announcements published.

First, email them to news@dnj.com. This goes to every editor, so it lessens the likelihood of your release being lost in the shuffle.

Second, be thorough in your information. Who, what, when, where and why still apply. Use first and last names. Don’t forget location – this happens more frequently than you might believe on event announcements.

Third, if possible, include photos. They need to be a .jpg, in focus (we can’t use Photoshop to make an out of focus photo in focus). Also, include videos, if you have one, or a link to your video. This is helpful for our website.

Are you sending us coverage of an event that already happened? Send lots of photos! We’d love to make a photo gallery online.

Are you sending us coverage of an event that already happened? Be timely. The further we get from the event, the less likely we’ll run the coverage.

Don’t forget to announce your event in our free online calendar. You can submit an item at this link.

If you have any questions, or aren’t sure how to submit an an item, just give me a call at 278-5181 and I’ll do my best to help you out.
